A Nation is Only as Strong as its People

“The strength of a nation lies in the homes of its people”.
~Abraham Lincoln~

Obvious key factors have always stood out in the foundation that gave America its greatness. These were not hidden secrets to the famous people who played out important parts in our history and who wrote about them. These key factors should not be hidden secrets to us by any means. These valuable ingredients are necessary in a Republic for sustainability. They are biblical faith, character, virtue, and moral education. These are the same guidelines God gave to old Israel to follow.

When the great Hebrew leader Moses was about to depart this earth, he made sure that the people of Israel had learned all that God had taught them. He wrote down this review and it is known as the book of Deuteronomy in the Bible. The name Deuteronomy means, “copy”, “repetition” or “the law twice given”. Deuteronomy is the basic outline and reiteration of all the laws Israel was commanded to follow as they entered and established into the Promised Land.

God told Israel the following in Deuteronomy 4:

1“And now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the rules that I am teaching you, and do them, that you may live, …2You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, …you who held fast to the LORD your God are all alive today… 6Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ 7For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? 8And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today? 9“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—”

 In Deuteronomy 6:6-7 he said:

“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”

This was a commission that old Israel never fully accomplished being that they did not continue to apply these statutes and they also rejected the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

It is not far-fetched to say that, in the beginning, America built its foundation upon those laws and proved that God is accurate to give them to Israel and perpetuated them for us to follow as well. Any nation that wants to prosper must implement and never lose sight of these valuable principles. America heeded these values and became the most coveted nation in all of human history, which is why it is so tragic that we allowed ourselves to drift from that foundation.

We were warned by people like Mississippi Governor Kirk Fordice who said: “The less we emphasize the Christian religion the further we fall into the abyss of poor character and chaos in the United States of America.”

The Pilgrims also recognized this value and made sure they set this solid foundation from the very beginning when they made the liberty to honor and worship our Creator the most important cornerstone for this nation, as stated in the Mayflower Compact.

The sentiment and priority of many key figures in our history was in lockstep with preacher Henry Ward Beecher when he said: “Let us implore the God of our fathers, by his own wise providence, to save us from our wanton passions, from impertinent egotism, from pride, arrogance, cruelty, and sensual lusts, that as a nation we may show forth His praise in all the earth.”

We would do well to reiterate this wise counsel in our prayers for America especially as we approach this Thanksgiving Season.

God, help us save America!
