A True Woman of Valor

“A virtuous woman, who can find?
For her worth is far above rubies.”
(Proverbs 31:10)

We should always celebrate the women in our lives. But the month of May is especially set apart for doing just that. There is probably no other woman in just the right place and at the right time in our lives to influence us the most like our mother.

Most of us can trace the significant moments in life to the part our mother played in our formation. We know not all mothers fulfill this divine vocation in life as she should, for they too are human and carry scars and deficiencies in their past, but it is undeniable that whether they do a good job in raising us or not, the vast majority of mothers love their children with an undying love that surpasses time, circumstances, and outcomes.

The Bible and history are full of outstanding women—though we may not even know their names, they contributed greatly to the lives of their children and thus to society as a whole.

Perhaps one of the most outstanding portions of Scripture which describes a true woman of valor and virtue is Proverbs 31:10-31.

The woman of valor as described in this passage of Scripture does it all and she does it well. She takes good care of her family and household needs first with diligence and in that priority and without neglecting her first responsibilities. It is sad and tragic that the modern-day woman wants to also do it all but sadly has her priorities in the wrong place and the first thing that suffers is her family—meaning her responsibility to her marriage, if she is married with children, and her home. It seems that to the modern-day woman what is most important is her personal accomplishments and even earning money to supposedly provide for her children a better life which for the most part is material. A better house, car, clothes, vacations, etc.

The woman of Proverbs 31 is first and foremost a godly woman with strong faith that embraces God and then carries out her responsibilities in her service to him. This gives her the strength and proper perspective to move forward and live a fulfilling life. She is industrious and contributes to her community. She is strong yet gentle, compassionate, and kind. It is no wonder then that her children and husband call her blessed, and most importantly her God is greatly pleased with her. She is a model woman of valor.

Life is always very challenging no matter what our status in life might be and women are vital in their importance to the outcome of a family, community and society as a whole. Never underestimate your importance as a woman of God guided by godly values that will make your life truly valuable even if no one notices who you are and what you do—God does.
