Freedom Always Requires Sacrifice

“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
(Genesis 3:15)

When I think of freedom I think of the ultimate freedom we have received through our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. I think of the very first promise God gave of this glorious event that would come into human history someday to deliver us from sin and death and the grips of Satan when he pronounced the death of Satan through Jesus Christ when he told the serpent in the Garden of Eden: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)

Since then, all who have wanted to be true children of God have had to pay a high price of obedience to God’s will even unto death and we gladly do it to be in right relationship with our heavenly Father to enjoy the ultimate blessings and freedom with him now and throughout all eternity. No sacrifice is too difficult for that great reward!

Beginning with righteous Abel all the way through millennia to the very last believer or martyr for the faith that died today, the sacrifice for our freedom has been the same, which is to lay down our life in the service of our Lord and others. Some have died of natural causes, accidents, victims of crime, some have died as patriots for freedom risking their lives to save others and there are those who were martyred for their faith and service to our Lord.

In eternity we will have a lot of people to thank for paying the price to bring God’s saving truth to us so we could know him, love him, and serve him and be with him forever. Especially Jesus our Savior and Lord. All along the human chain, especially the one that is recorded in God’s Word—the Bible—many have been the instruments that have allowed God to use them, at a great sacrifice, so you and I could be blessed, and guess what? We can do no less for others. They are counting on us. We cannot be the recipients of the blessing of spiritual and physical freedom and not pay the price to pass it along to future generations.

Think of the early Christians who were thrown into an arena with hungry lions and torn apart piece by piece while many of them sang songs of worship unto God. All but one of the hand-picked disciples of Christ died a martyr for the faith, but thanks to them we received the teachings, miracles and wonders of Jesus which continue to bless our lives to this day 2000 years later.

Here in America, what can we say about the countless patriots who died to gain us our freedoms that we abundantly enjoy up until today. Beginning with the Pilgrims and early settlers and colonists.

We have a very vivid record of the sacrifice paid by the fifty-six men who signed our Declaration of Independence. Most of them knew they were signing their death sentence but did it anyway. Their conviction resulted in untold sufferings for themselves and their families. Of the fifty-six, five were captured by the British and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army. Another had two sons captured. Nine of the fifty-six fought and died from wounds or hardships of the war.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships sunk by the British navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts and died in poverty.

At the battle of Yorktown, the British general Cornwallis had taken over Thomas Nelson’s home for his headquarters. Nelson told General George Washington to open fire on the Nelson home. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying. Their thirteen children fled for their lives. His fields and mill were destroyed. For over a year, he lived in forests and caves, returning home only to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later, he died from exhaustion.

Next time you or someone you know is trashing Christianity or our nation and speaking ill of its foundation and say it should be radically transformed. Boldly as them, INTO WHAT? Think about this horrific price it cost and ask yourself if you or they are willing to pay an equal price for its “transformation” because freedom always requires sacrifice.
