Yes, we are in deep trouble. Anyone who dares to deny it is looking at life through rose-colored glasses and headed for a rude awakening. At the same time, I have reasons to be very optimistic of the outcome.
Do not confuse my optimism with ignoring what is happening to our nation, which now lives in post-Christianity, post-Constitution, post-freedom, post-economic solvency, post-world leader, and many more post-something. On top of that, for the most part, we have government officials failing to honor their oath of office and the separation of powers. We have not hit rock bottom yet; however, we’re not far from it if we continue to be so obsessed in ignoring the handwriting on the wall.
President Truman told the Attorney General’s Conference, February 15, 1950: “The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount. The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings we get from Exodus and St. Matthew, from Isaiah and St. Paul. I don’t think we emphasize that enough these days. If we don’t have a proper fundamental moral background, we will finally end up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the State!”
More and more, Americans believe that we’re moving toward dictatorship and tyranny. I do not fully disagree with them, however, for over 200 years aristocrats, for the most part, have dominated this nation. Aristocrats are those who are part of the governing and wealthy elite and are as dangerous as dictators and tyrants; they too believe that laws do not apply to them. This is exactly what the generation of the Founding Fathers fought a war for to liberate themselves and future generations from that form of malady that infected the world of their time. Yet, here we are in this same predicament, but we do have a choice and that’s where my optimism comes in. I still believe there are genuinely smart Americans left and more are going to rise up and push back.
I’m sure you’re familiar with the parable of the prodigal son found in Luke 15:11–32. This parable in many ways is used to show God’s love, and I agree. I want to challenge us to look at this parable in a different light, not questioning God’s love, rather putting Christian America in the place of the prodigal son.
Christian America received a great inheritance from the Forefathers and the Founding Fathers. Christian Americans decided to gradually depart from the rich legacy based upon biblical principles and forsaking to be under God’s form of government; decided to venture out on their own wasting their fortune on wild living. Christian America has not yet hit rock bottom like the prodigal son who found himself in disastrous circumstances and had to take on a job feeding pigs, a demeaning occupation for a Jew. America is rapidly dropping from being the most prosperous nation in the world and is becoming more and more like socialist, decadent Europe and the Third World nations. The prognostications are that China, the Marxists-capitalists, will be the richest country in the world this year.
In 1620, the Pilgrims did not arrive to the shores of this continent for gold and glory; their goal was for God’s glory. That is a huge difference from where we find ourselves today. With God it’s never about money or wealth but the unity in advancing God’s form of culture on earth as it is in heaven.
What Christian America has yet to demonstrate is if, like the prodigal son, she will come to her senses by remembering who the God of the Bible is and what was the purpose for the founding of this nation. Is Christian America ready to humble herself as she recognizes her foolishness and repents from her wicked ways in accordance to 2 Chronicles 7:14? My daily prayer is that she will and not so much to regain lost wealth but righteousness throughout the land and to spread the revealed truth as a witness to the rest of the world, to demonstrate what brought about America’s success. Once again, America can have the opportunity to let the world know what made her the free, just, and great nation by acknowledging her original history of first principles which were based on the Bible.
Neither Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians nor Independents can turn the nation around in the right direction except Christian American prodigals. Let us learn from the prodigal son by being wise and determined to return to our heavenly Father’s home and government: “I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you’” (Luke 15:18).
